(GALVESTON, TX) November 22, 2017 – With over 6.5 million visitors to the island in 2016, the number of pedestrians on the Seawall has increased exponentially in recent years.  In an effort to ensure that they have ample places to cross the Seawall in high traffic areas, the city installed midblock crosswalks in July of this year. The first two crosswalks where installed in front of the San Luis Resort and the Holiday Inn Express. These locations were selected because the areas, both directly across from the beach access stairs, experience a high volume of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. On Wednesday, November 22nd, the City added pedestrian activated LED lighting to both locations in an effort to increase driver awareness of pedestrians utilizing the crossings.

“The pedestrian crosswalks were heavily utilized over the summer months without incident,” said Public Works Director Kyle Hockersmith. “With the days being shorter through the winter, we wanted to ensure that there is ample visibility after sunset for our visitors.”

These crosswalks are made of a thermoplastic retroreflective material that spans 20 feet across. The areas are complete with numerous safety features to alert drivers that include advanced warning signage, a solid white line as driver’s approach, a yield bar, reflective buttons, no loading/parking zones adjacent to the crosswalks to provide drivers with a sight visibility triangle, and now pedestrian activated LED lighting across the roadway.

Pedestrians wishing to cross will simply press the button and LED lights will activate on both sides of the crosswalk signaling to drivers in all lanes of traffic that a pedestrian is crossing.
