Galveston Set to Swear in 59th Police Chief on February 9th
Galveston, TX -
February 5th, 2018 – As the 59th Chief of Police for the City of Galveston, Chief Vernon Hale will be only the 3rd Chief that the Island has seen that was hired from outside of the agency. While some may find this intimidating, Chief Hale has declared himself a “CBI”, Chosen By Island, and has immersed himself in Galveston’s rich history, culture of togetherness, and spent many hours listening to community concerns.
Over the last month, Hale spent time visiting with various community groups, being the grand marshal of both the MLK Day Parade and the Krewe of Aquarius parade, getting to know the pastors of our community at our monthly Cop Clergy breakfast, welcoming the newest cohort of Citizens Police Academy students, and attending the oldest black church in Texas. Community involvement and visibility is high on Hale’s priority list as he sees it as a crucial piece of the crime fighting puzzle.
“In my 26 years, the best policing that I have seen has been done when we walked hand in hand with our residents,” said Chief Vernon Hale. “We can’t help people that we don’t know. Visibility and community involvement will be at the top of my list as I work through ways that we can improve the services that we provide.”
Also among Hale’s goals and priorities for his first year will be to address traffic concerns throughout the City, a vigilant crack down on emerging drug houses, and spending time getting to know each officer and learning how we can better develop our team.
“We hired Chief Hale because of his emphasis on community involvement and his reputation for being fair but firm,” said City Manager Brian Maxwell. “His first month here has shown it his first priority and his reputation holds true. That gives us, as City leaders and residents of the Island, a lot of hope for what the future holds for GPD.”
The official change of command will take place on February 9th as Chief Richard Boyle retires with 40 years of service to law enforcement. Following his retirement, and a few words from City Manager Brian Maxwell, Chief Hale will officially be sworn in as the Galveston Police Chief. The ceremony will be held at the Moody Gardens Hotel & Convention Center in the Floral Ballroom. The ceremony in is open to the public and there will be a brief meet and greet and with Chief Hale and farewell with retired Chief Boyle immediately following the ceremony.
