City to Break Ground on New Public Works Facility February 21st
Galveston, TX – February 8th, 2018 – On February 21st at 9:30am, the City of Galveston, will break ground on one of the larger projects to come from the funding received in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. This 20,000-square foot administration facility and 10,000-square foot warehouse will replace aged storm damaged facilities currently being used by the City. The current facilities will be demolished as part of the project.
The $10,832,495 investment in our community will house many of the City’s public works departments including Streets, Traffic, Drainage, Management Services, and Utilities Collections and Distribution. The facility will be located at 30th and Market and construction is scheduled to begin in February and projected for completion in September 2019.
Lockwood, Andrews, & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) completed the architectural design and JW Kelso Company, Inc will build the facility. This project is being paid for entirely through CDBG Round 2.2 funding. The Texas General Land Office awarded these funds to the City of Galveston for projects such as this to continue to harden and improve the infrastructure of Galveston Island for our residents.
“This facility has been envisioned for a long time to help us continue to meet the needs of our community,” said City Manager, Brian Maxwell. “These departments work side by side daily in the field, combining them administratively under one roof will provide much needed efficiencies in operations.”
The project will include the construction of the two buildings mentioned above, demolition of the Bersinger Building and the old utilities building, and construction of the associated parking and equipment storage areas.
We invite the public to join us as we break ground on this historic project for the City:
