Galveston’s Hurricane Preparedness Fair Set for Saturday, May 19th

Prepare for Hurricane Season: Exhibitions, Preparedness & Recovery Experts, Refreshments & Door Prizes at the McGuire Dent Recreation Center

(GALVESTON, TX) April 30th, 2018 – June 1st marks the beginning of hurricane season and Island officials are encouraging the public to be prepared. The City of Galveston will host its annual Galveston Preparedness Fair beginning at 10 AM, Saturday, May 19th, at the McGuire Dent Recreation Center Gymnasium located at 2222 28th Street. Important information about the upcoming hurricane season, evacuation procedures, and assistance as well as family, home, and pet preparation will be available.

This year’s preparedness fair will be staffed with representatives from the National Weather Service, CenterPoint Energy, Galveston County’s Office of Emergency Management, the Galveston Fire Department, the City of Galveston Office of Emergency Management, Red Cross, Texas Gas, and many other preparedness and recovery experts. The fair will also have numerous vendors that specialize in helping families, pets, and senior citizens prepare their homes for hurricane season.

This is a casual, informative event and all are encouraged to attend and meet local officials and experienced weather professionals, promote community awareness, and enjoy free hot dogs, refreshments, and door prizes throughout the event.

Do You Need Evacuation Assistance? You Must Register with The State of Texas This Year

This year, the City is transitioning over to the State's evacuation assistance registry called STEAR. Residents who need evacuation assistance with medical or access and functional needs, including anyone who registered in years past with the previous need-a-ride system, will need to register as soon as possible with the State of Texas by calling 2-1-1 on any landline or mobile device. Registration is also available online at https://STEAR.dps.texas.gov. Moving over to this system will allow a more coordinated effort across the state for assessing needs during a state of emergency. Residents can also register in person at the annual preparedness fair.

Make Sure the City Can Reach You During an Emergency

Residents are strongly encouraged to sign up for the City’s FREE emergency notification system by visiting www.galvestontx.gov and clicking on the “One Call Reaches All” banner on the City’s homepage. This system is designed to provide important alerts to citizens and will be tested prior to the start of hurricane season.
