Galveston, TX – August 17, 2018 – The City of Galveston is proud to announce and welcome Marissa Barnett, who will start in this position on August 27th, as the city’s Public Information Officer (PIO).
As the PIO, Marissa will be responsible for managing and disseminating information to the press and public. Integral to this will be the management and programming of the city’s public access channel as well as social media outlets. She will serve as the city’s spokesperson and point of contact for the media and the public in need of news and information.
For the last three years, Marissa has worked as a reporter for The Daily News, where she’s primarily written about local government in Galveston, Texas City, and La Marque. Her experience also includes a fellowship with the Dallas Morning News as a Capitol reporter, and as a reporter with the Austin American-Statesman and KUT News.
Marissa possesses a Master of Arts degree from the Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas, and a Bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Illinois.
“I’m thrilled to join the city of Galveston,” Barnett said. “I look forward to working with the community and being accessible to residents and the media to keep people informed about the things that matter to them.”

Marissa is not a B.O.I. but she considers herself an “islander by choice.” Outside of work, she enjoys listening to music, traveling, biking and trying new foods.
