New gym equipment arrives at McGuire Dent

McGuire Dent Recreation Center is getting a fresh exterior and new exercise equipment! On Tuesday, staff finished installing new exercise equipment while crews continued painting outside.

The Galveston City Council in October approved two budget items: with $112,596 to repaint the exterior of the recreation center and $73,535 for the purchase of new gym equipment. Crews are painting the exterior of the building, but will keep the turtle mural painted on the Seawall-facing side of the building.

The center is an excellent community resource on the island and many residents use it. On average, about 325 people visit the center each day, or about 6,000 adults and 1,900 youth per month. It’s one of two recreation centers on the island free to the public. We’re thrilled to have this as a resource toward improving our residents’ health and well-being, and the new equipment is a great investment in those goals.

The new equipment includes: five elliptical, three treadmills, three recumbent bikes, two upright bikes and three adaptive motion trainers. We also recently replaced a rowing machine.
