Galveston PD Robbery Task Force Arrests 7 in Connection with Recent String of Robberies

GPD PRESS RELEASE

Galveston, TX - January 11, 2019 - In response to an apparent string of armed robberies that the island has recently been experiencing, the Galveston Police Department on Monday, Jan. 7 created a Robbery Suppression Task Force to swiftly investigate and stem the robberies. The creation of the task force allowed for officers from several units and divisions to be reassigned so that priority could be placed on these violent crimes.

It had been observed that the details of how several of the robberies were conducted and the descriptions of the suspects were very similar. As such, within hours of its establishment, the task force began pursuing leads and working with other agencies to identify and arrest the subjects responsible for these robberies. The first arrest was made Tuesday night, and the intel gained from that arrest helped lead officers to several others.

So far since its creation, the task force has arrested four adults and three juveniles in connection with the string of robberies. These arrests combined have cleared nearly all of the reported aggravated robberies (approximately nine cases) the island has experienced in the last 30 days.

In addition to the arrests this week, officers have executed six search warrants, seized ecstasy, Xanax, and marijuana all packaged for delivery, and seized five firearms, two of which were stolen.

While they have cleared the bulk of the recent aggravated robberies, the task force is not done yet. The investigation is still continuing and we expect more charges to be forthcoming. The Galveston Police Department would like to thank the following agencies who assisted in these investigations: Galveston Office of United States Marshal Service and Gulf Coast Violent Offender’s Task Force, Texas Department of Public Safety, Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, La Marque Police Department, League City Police Department, Texas City Police Department, UTMB Police Department and the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office.
