Galveston, TX – August 27, 2018 - Once again, the Galveston Police Department and other community leaders joined efforts to support and engage with our local youth. On Friday, August 24th, the Galveston Police Department hosted a Back to School party at the Lasker Park Pool for 52 children in the community. The children chosen to attend this event demonstrated good behavior and teamwork throughout the summer programs held at the Parks and Recreation Centers in Galveston.

GPD Community Liaison, Officer Harris, along with Chief Hale and members of the Special Operations Division, partnered with the GPD Marine Division, Galveston CPAAA, Galveston Municipal Police Association and the City’s Parks & Recreation Department to organize the Back to School party.

The kids not only enjoyed a fun afternoon at the pool, they were also surprised with colorful swimsuits and backpacks full of school supplies. The swimsuits were donated by the Thin Blue Line Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club-Galveston Chapter, and the Amity Lodge #4 Galveston, Texas, both represented by GPD officers. Also, members of the Galveston Police Department provided the backpacks and school supplies.

The Galveston Municipal Police Association and the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association provided food, condiments, and sides for the event, while Sgt. John Courtney, member of the Marine Division, volunteered to cook throughout the afternoon. The entrance fee to the pool was graciously sponsored by Better Parks for Galveston, a non-profit organization that supports the development of city parks, facilities, and programs.

Several GPD officers, along with all the officers within the Special Operations Division, also joined in water play while the GPD Marine Division provided water safety throughout the event.  “Every successful individual is only as strong as the community working together to support them,” Officer Harris said. “GPD takes great pleasure in supporting the children that are our future and we look forward to this event and many more to come.”
