University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston Campus
Established in 1891, the UTMB Galveston Campus is the birthplace of UTMB Health. The Galveston Campus houses four schools, research facilities, John Sealy Hospital, the newly built, $438 million Jennie Sealy Hospital, and a level I trauma center. UTMB Research includes:
- Home to one of two bio-containment labs in the United States dedicated to developing treatments, vaccines, and diagnostics to combat infectious threats to health, such as Ebola and the Zika virus.
- UTMB scientists engineered the first Zika virus infectious clone, a key to rapid vaccine development and unraveling how the disease causes birth defects and disease.
- Growing human lungs in a lab with techniques that may spearhead groundbreaking advances in regenerative medicine, these experiments recently have been replicated aboard the International Space Station.
Shriners Hospitals for Children - Galveston
Shriners Hospitals for Children has served patients with burns since 1966. Thanks to new research, patients that have over 90% of their body can survive and lead full fruitful lives. All treatment and care is provided regardless of the families' ability to pay. Shriners Hospitals for Children includes:
- Galveston Shriners Hospital specializes in care for children with many types of burn injuries. Burn can includes skin grafting, burn reconstruction, and burn rehabilitation.
- Shriners also treats children with numerous types of skin conditions that include Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), Scalded Skin Syndrome (SSS), Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TENS), and flesh-eating bacteria.
- Locally trained plastic and reconstructive surgeons at Shriners are nationally recognized. The surgeons are able to meet many needs including burn scarring, and congenital malformations.
