About the Citizens Police Academy

The Citizens Police Academy offers an inside look into a wide variety of GPD divisions and special teams including Officer Recruitment and Training, Criminal Investigation, S.W.A.T., Crime Scene Investigation, K-9 Unit, Marine Division, Vice/Narcotics, and more.

Presentations open a window into Galveston Police Department staff assignments and daily operations. This offers a unique opportunity to become more involved in your community, network with others across the island, and ultimately come together in partnership with your police department.

Registration is now open for our next Virtual Citizens Police Academy:

The Galveston Police Department is excited to announce that this year’s Citizens Police Academy is going Virtual! This one-of-a-kind Virtual Citizens Police Academy will take place on Zoom every Thursday from March 25th, 2021 to April 29th, 2021. Class hours are from 6 pm – 8 pm.

This Virtual Academy includes 6 evening sessions and will be offered in an accelerated format. This format allows participants to learn about every aspect of their police department while also maintaining and following local health regulations.

The mission of the Citizens Police Academy is to provide understanding through education. The academy is not part of the training one would need to become a police officer, nor does it provide academic credit. Instead, it is intended for community members to learn more about reducing crime, improving quality of life in their neighborhoods, and building relationships with law enforcement personnel.

Requirements

Applicants should be 18 years of age or older and either live or work in the City of Galveston.

Due to the sensitive subject matter, applicants will be subjected to a background check. Participants must attend at least 5 classes to successfully complete the course.

If you'd like to participate in the Virtual Citizens Police Academy, please email ecoronado@galvestontx.gov or call 409.765.3785 for more details.
