GALVESTON, TX – June 25, 2021 – There are new rules for golf cart rental operators and owners passed to promote better safety on our roadways.
The Galveston City Council on Thursday voted to enact new regulations for golf cart use, including an increased permit fee for golf cart rental operators and additional safety equipment and license plate requirements.
Under the new requirements, annual registration fees for golf carts will increase to $150 for commercial golf cart rental operators. The registration fee will remain $25 annually for residents.
The new regulations also require commercial operators to affix decals to the carts reminding renters to stay in the right lane and wear seat belts. There should also be information on the golf cart about where they are allowed in the city.
Residential and commercial golf carts will require registration, a license plate, seat belts, and inspections, per the ordinance.
The violations are misdemeanors punishable by up to a $200 fine. While the ordinance goes into effect immediately, there will be a grace period for enforcement. We will update before the grace period ends. Additionally the city is preparing a list of approved places for inspections, which will be made available on the website and updated here.
