City of Galveston to host a Stormwater Master Plan Public Meeting

Galveston, TX – November 18, 2022 – The City of Galveston will host a public meeting on Thursday, December 15th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., at the Galveston Water and Electric Light Community Center, 715 30th Street, Galveston, Texas 77550, to educate the public about the SWMP.

The SWMP Project, which began in February 2022, includes a comprehensive examination of the current drainage conditions on Galveston Island and the development of an updated and strategic SWMP. This approach includes updates to storm sewer modeling, sheet flow evaluations, and identifying risks and problem areas related to existing conditions. The fieldwork that will be implemented with the SWMP Project is associated with a study focused on understanding the overall existing storm drainage systems and recommending a series of improvements to reduce the flood risk from localized rainfall within the City.

Like many coastal communities, the City of Galveston is faced with operating and maintaining a system of stormwater infrastructure that manages and improves the quality of stormwater runoff, mitigates flooding, and protects life and property. The City currently relies on its 2003 Drainage Master Plan, which was developed under different circumstances than those existing today. After almost 20 years, this plan no longer accurately reflects current conditions, including changes in regulatory requirements, uncertainties related to weather and the economy, or the impacts from capital projects planned and implemented by federal, state, and regional stakeholders.

The meeting is an opportunity for residents to learn more about the project and offer comments while the plan takes shape.  City staff, as well as consultants with the project, will be in attendance to answer questions about the project, discuss current drainage conditions, explain how residents and businesses will be affected by the project next steps, and to gain information from the public regarding flooding and drainage to their homes, properties, and businesses.

For information about the City of Galveston SWMP Project or to provide input, the public can provide comments regarding the City of Galveston SWMP Project at any time via the project email address ( or through the City of Galveston SWMP Project webpage comment portal (
