Island commemorating Juneteenth with parade, picnic

Today is Juneteenth Independence Day! The island will celebrate today with a parade and picnic. This year the parade will begin at 12 p.m. at 26th & Ball streets and travel west on Ball to 41st Street before ending at Wright Cuney Park. There will be a picnic following the parade. Please note that streets will be closed along the route.

Juneteenth is an important day in American history, commemorating the June 19, 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas signifying the last remaining independence of enslaved people.
