Some utility billing customers inadvertently charged for a duplicate bill

GALVESTON, TX – July 19, 2019 – Some City of Galveston utility customers enrolled in AutoPay were billed this week in error. The city immediately started the process to have those charged quickly refunded.

On Wednesday night during a software update, 664 utility customers were inadvertently charged for water, wastewater, sanitation, recycling, and drainage services provided in May. This charge was a duplicate of the one already charged to the same credit or debit account in June.

The customers may have noticed a duplicate charge on their credit card or debit card account registered to their utility bill. The City of Galveston has worked with its credit card processor to refund the charge and the transaction crediting the customer’s account. The refund should appear on the customer’s bank accounts within two to four business days.

If a customer received a charge other than the duplicate charge, such as an overdraft fee, they should contact Customer Service at 409-797-3550 for assistance.

We apologize for the inconvenience this caused our customers. The City of Galveston is notifying all customers who were inadvertently charged by email or by phone. We encourage anyone with questions about this to contact Customer Service at 409-797-3550 with any questions in this matter.
