Galveston, TX – January 10, 2018 – The Galveston Fire Department has been the “Pride of the Island” since 1841, and the next opportunity to sign up to serve is here. On February 8th, GFD will hold their next civil service exam for any of those interested in joining the ranks alongside Galveston’s finest. The civil service exam is the first step in becoming a Galveston Firefighter.

Galveston is unique with historic buildings, a port, numerous attractions, and a fluctuating population. All of these factors on the Island make becoming a successful firefighter in our coastal community a challenge that only the finest are up for.

“We have a great deal of pride and tradition here in Galveston and the Firefighters play a major role in the safety and wellbeing of our residents and visitors,” said Galveston Fire Chief Mike Wisko. “We have high expectations and strive to be the best, while continuing to enjoy the privilege of protecting paradise. “

With 116 uniformed personnel and 5 civilian personnel, the department is divided into five divisions including Prevention, Operations, Special Operations, Emergency Management and Administration. There are six fire stations across the Island and they operate 10 front line apparatus daily. The department averages over 7,500 emergency responses, 35,000 training hours, 1,500 commercial business inspections and many public safety events annually.
