Historic Galveston Water & Electric Light Community Center
The Historic Galveston Water and Electric Light Community Center, located at 715 30th Street, was originally constructed in 1904 and replaced the building that was destroyed by the 1900 storm. The building originally housed the City’s water pump, electricity generator and horse-drawn fire department. The pump station was decommissioned in 2010 with the construction of the new 30th street pump station located adjacent to the site.
Prior to the decommissioning of the building in 2010, it was the oldest functioning municipal waterworks plant in the United States. As a result of the devastation from Hurricane Ike in 2008, the City was awarded funding from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) through the Texas General Land Office (GLO) to restore the facility for use as a community center that is located in the heart of the Cedars at Carver Park mixed income multi-family community. With the completion of the renovations to the facility, the community center conforms to all current American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. The renovations to the facility were completed in December 2020.
The Community Center is managed by the City of Galveston Parks and Recreation Department. The Community Center is available to all residents in the Cedars at Carver Park community for community events. In addition, the community center is available for event rental, subject to availability and approval.
